Menopause symptoms are unpredictable enough on their own. New research suggests women managing type 2 diabetes may be having a harder time with “the change.” As reported by Contemporary OB/GYN, a study published in the journal Menopause found that women with type 2 diabetes reported both a higher number of menopause symptoms and greater symptom severity than women without it. The gap was clearest after menopause. According to The Menopause Society, the hormonal shifts of the menopause transition raise a woman’s risk of chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes. Weight gain and fat redistribution to the midsection increase visceral fat, which raises that risk further. Researchers have long suspected the relationship runs both ways, but most previous work focused on when menopause happened rather than how it felt.
